2011_0225 Nice Surprise

Life gets busy and it gets tough to eat healthy. The past two weeks have been very busy. Not only have I felt like I have been eating too many calories a day, it also felt like I was not exercising enough. I neglected to use my LoseIt app so I certain I would have gained at least 4 lbs over that two week period. This morning I took a deep breath and got on the bathroom scale. As expected I did gain weight. To my surprise, I only gained 0.4lbs! Yay me!

2011_0203 Nike+ GPS Challenge

I have an iPhone and purchased the Nike+ GPS app from iTunes for $1.99. What this app does it use your phone's GPS to track where you are and determines your distance, time, and calories you have burned. You can also use it while on the treadmill. I used the app during January on the treadmill and found it needed some calibration. After a few 1 mile runs/walks on the treadmill, it was good to go. In looking around the NikeRunning.com website, I found they have challenges you can participate in. They are free to participate. So, for the month of February I am participating in the " StayStrong 25 " From 02/01/11 to 03/01/11 I need to log 25 miles. I am not a runner so all my miles are walked miles. As of this posting, there are 23 participants and I am in 2nd place with 8.1miles. Yay me! The participant in first place has 13.58miles logged. The participant in 3rd place has 7.92miles logged. I better get my feet moving before he catches up to me or worse, passes me up! A...

2011_0129 2nd Half of Chapter 2

All Calories Created Equal? A good thing to mention is that not all calories are created equal. I have seen countless talk shows with guest who practically starve themselves to death because all they do is count calories to the extreme. But, it's not just the calories you need to worry about, it is the quality of the calories as well. A simple example I can relate to is a small banana, just under 6" vs. 1 piece butterscotch hard candy. The first is about 72 calories, the latter is about 70 calories. While the candy is 2 less calories, you get more nutritional calories out of the banana. So, no, not all calories are created equal. Foods That Help the Calorie Cause The subsections which follow, were helpful in both understanding the common buzz words and using them in everyday life to lose weight: Complex Carbs, Friendly Fats, Protein, and Fiber. The Top 10 Foods That Fill You Up: The Cream of The Crop Reading the list and their advantages was enlightening. I must say I had nev...
